Modern multieffects, rackmount ones in particular, can time the delay to the song tempo. Here's the formula:
60.000/t
where 60.000 are milliseconds in a minute; t is the song tempo.
The result in milliseconds is a quarter-note delay, i.e. an echo repeating notes a quarter-note later. To set shorter repetitions, say 1/8 or 1/16, just divide this value by 2 or 4; for eighth-note triplets by 3. By putting played notes and repeats at equal volume, we can create more complex rhythms; this was used by U2's guitarist in the intro to "Where The Streets Have No Name" (tempo q=126, delay=357 mSec). This delay is not quarter-note, however. The repeat is 3/16 later (dotted eighth). Just take the formula and multiply by 3/4 (i.e. divide by 4 and multiply times 3). It is important to experiment this method with a metronome to gain the max precision and understand how every delay time sounds. Often the multieffect allows for delay placement: we can put repeats in stereo, to have for example the direct sound center, the first repeat far right and the second repeat far left, or put the direct sound far left and the repeats far right. We can also pan different delays in the stereo field, say 1/4 right and a dotted eighth left. Here' s a useful table:
TEMPO 1/4 1/8 1/8· Triplet 1/16
